The 1st gen doesn't have access to Netflix or any 3rd part content nor any features of the other models (i.e. There are other devices, but if you want something akin to Apple TV that won't exist elsewhere.
It is best to start considering a replacement. Most users have already started to experience failure. Not sure why it isn't working on the version you have, but my point was that even if you were to get that working again it is only a matter of time before it starts to fail, it is already 12 years old and while your other gear may still work you can't expect this type of device to last much longer. Apple removed that function from current versions of iTunes as it didn't make sense to keep that feature on a product that had long been classified as obsolete and didn't have a big user base. The only thing you would be losing would be the ability to sync content, but as I said you would simply setup a client on the Apple TV (there are various apps available for this) that would enable you to stream directly from your NAS to Apple TVĪs I said the 1st gen was the only product that could sync, all other models are streaming only. It would simply require an audio extractor to connect to your sound system, as I explained above. You would not need a lot of equipment to setup an equivalent. Home Sharing itself, within iTunes on your Mac/Pac, is still very much intact and I use it regularly. That article strictly refers to accessing home sharing through IOS. The radio station on the apple TV gen 1 still works, but not Netflix. So I use the Dell to feed from the NAS to both the TV and the Macintosh. It also plays on my smart TVs, but those speakers are pathetic. I also use my Qnap NAS to stream to my Bose Q35 headphones.
It also allows me to play the original source CD, DVD, or Blu-ray. My living room set-up has an old Dell with a PCI M-audio sound card with an even better Macintosh stereo system. Might other configurations or other devices work as well or better? What would be the advantage of investing in a current apple TV? I would need quite a bit of other equipment to set up an equivalent to the old apple TV while still taking advantage of my RCA audiophile receiver and also the HDMI TV (while not experiencing delay on the couple of DVD concerts I own). I stopped updating when it was announced that home sharing was being abandoned in favor of a paid apple music subscription service. I think it was removed from iTunes for other reasons. The apple TV gen 1 could both sync and stream, (music, not photos).
